Mechanoreception
Mechanoreceptors are responsible for the detection of mechanical stimuli. Chiefly they are responsible for the detection of water currents, the maintenance of balance and hearing. A neuromast organ is a small collection of one such basic mechanoreceptor, a hair cell, of which its name is derived from its appearance. There are three types of mechanoreceptive systems: the later line system that detects water currents, the vestibular apparatus that senses changes in equilibrium, and the auditory system that responds to sound.
